An Ounce of Protection

spfRegardless of the SPF (Sun Protection Factor) number, sunscreen can only protect the skin it actually covers. The golden rule of sun protection is proper and repeated application of sunscreen or sunblock.

Sunscreen works like a filter allowing some light through while a sunblock acts as a shield to block and deflect rays away from the skin. The SPF only measures the protection provided against UVB rays. There is no equivalent rating system for UVA radiation. Look for labels marked as “broad-spectrum,” meaning it contains ingredients to combat both UVB and UVA.

Whichever your preference, don’t skimp! Use one ounce or one golf ball size dollop to cover the entire body. Most people don’t apply as much product as recommended and therefore weaken the sun protection factor. If measuring is too overwhelming, try squeezing a line of lotion down the arms and legs to distribute product. Rub it in well, and then repeat. Don’t forget about the ears and tops of feet. Coat all exposed areas before sun exposure and reapply every two hours or after swimming or sweating.

Enjoy the sunshine, but remember an ounce of sunscreen applied to the skin is worth two in the bottle.
