They refer to the days following the rise of the star, Sirius, which was historically connected with heat, drought, sudden thunderstorms, lethargy, and mad dogs (source).

Some salon owners may translate this phrase to mean a period of slow (lethargic) sales. We've collected a few marketing ideas to help you wrap up the summer.

This time of year, young adults and parents alike are gearing up to go back to school. Use this to your advantage to bring traffic into your salon and increase activity on your social media pages.

 

Host a School Supply Drive:

  • Partner with a local elementary school and have customers bring in donated school supplies.
  • Allow them to earn a free tan/ upgrade or a discount on services.
  • We suggest you get the local school lists from Target or Wal-Mart and have some handy in the salon. Use social media outlets, newspapers to make it a big deal.
  • Make sure the retail area is set and employees are ready to sell

 

5 O’clock Somewhere Promo:

  • Everyone that comes in during the week enters their name into a drawing
  • At 5pm on Friday draw a name for a free week of tanning or a discount, etc
  • Also talk about “cocktail” aka “Double Dip” tanning- make sure your employees understand this concept too!
  • Offer half off a UV and Spray session when used together

Have your customers post a picture to social media showing off their great tan and school colors, allow them to enter to win a drawing for a free week of tanning, a free upgrade, a free spray tan or a free moisturizer. The reward can change, but the idea is to get more views on your social media. People will tan where their friends tan.
