The other day I asked a salon owner in Alabama if they were selling T-shirts and their response was “I can give them away, but no one is willing to buy them. When I’ve tried, I only sold a few. I got tired of messing with it and finally gave them all away. I figured if nothing else, it would be good free advertising for my salon.”
It is good advertising for your salon, but there’s a way you can sell T-shirts and get free advertising to boot - a lot of it. Here’s how:
Get a few dozen shirts printed up with your salon name and logo, or a catchy saying like I Get My Tan On at Dave’s Tanning Salon. Next have a T-shirt Upgrade Day and sell these shirts for $10 to $15 each. Now I know what you’re thinking - “No one will pay $15 bucks for my T-shirt.” Well my answer to that is “Let’s think out of the box!”
When your customer wears your shirt on T-Shirt Tuesday, or any other day you designate (make sure it’s not the same day / same deal every week), give them a ½ price upgrade, two dollar upgrades, or a bonus upgrade. Change it up every week during the busy season. Some days it might be Only VIP Members Get a Free Upgrade When You Come in with Dave’s T-shirt On. Give the non-EFT member half price, which will build your EFT memberships in the process. It will also make your salon gossip-worthy on that day when everyone in the community is wearing your T-shirt. This makes selling the T-shirts easy.
I have several salon customers that have sold more than one hundred T-shirts this way and gotten a lot of free advertising. Remember, it’s about creating value – give them a reason to wear your T-shirt.
Have fun, create a buzz, and increase your dollars per customer.
Caution: No thong Thursdays or Speedo Fridays! LOL
