Taking Safety Measures in Sunless Tanning

Cosmetologist using aerograph for spray tan apply to young female back wearing bikini in beauty salon.

There is no such thing as ‘safe’ tanning and sunless should not be defined that way, but as an alternative to UV Tanning.  The FDA suggests spray tan techs wear face ventilators and eye protection. The FDA also want clients to cover their mucous membranes by wearing a thong, nose plugs and disposable eyewear. Why would the spray tan tech wear a mask and not the client?  Think of it like your nail salon.   When you get your nails done, the tech wears a mask.  She doesn’t give you a mask.  We understand why—she’s exposed to the chemicals several times a day, you are exposed once a month.  Spray tan techs need to be aware that if they are sneezing brown or coughing up brown, they need to wearing a ventilator.

Jessica Rafferty, the Sunless Coordinator of Sun Seekers in Portsmouth and Dover, NH, explains,  “Our techs definitely wear tech eye protection when we spray bridal parties or are spraying a lot of people.  We also have a great room ventilation system, to protect our employees and our clients.  We have a  video to “soften” our clients to the idea of personal protection.  We use social media a lot to gently educate our clients about using protection.  We offer free disposable eye protection, free undergarments and sell lip balm to our clients”, explains Jessica.  “We have more and more clients protecting themselves daily.”

Jessica also learned that new lash extensions need to we covered when getting a spray tan.  “Lash extensions should not get any moisture on them for the first 24 hours, it weakens the glue. We’ve found that the deep cone clear disposable eye protection for sunless help our customer’s lashes stay nice much longer.”

Mat Rockey, CEO of Hush Lash Studios confirmed that a new set of lashes or a fill requires not getting the lashes wet for 24 hours.  Spray tanning does wet the lashes, so wearing eyewear for the first 24 hours before lash glue sets is critical.
